Cable Wakeboarding Current News
2009 WWA Worlds at CWC: March 24-29
The trip is almost over and I find it hard to put into words the experiences from the 11 day journey. Having heard so much about CWC and Governer Lray Villafuerte, I had pretty high expectations going into the trip. After arriving I found myself comparing the event to the Super Bowl or Final Four rather than any other wakeboard event I had ever attended. For six straight nights we watched firework shows that rivaled or beat the 4th of July shows put on by many average size municipalities. There was a full on TV crew that shot the event in HD. At least 6 cameras shooting for 14hrs a day for 5 days. A six person team that edited the footage on site for the live web cast around the clock. The jumbo screen, displaying the edited footage on site for spectators who couldn’t see the far side of the lake. Hundreds of workers cleaning and building something new every day. Then add in all of the media that flew in for the week. The complex and event were both, truly amazing!

Congratulations to all of the competitors, especially the overall winners Reed Hansen and Tom Fooshee. The two American athletes took top honors in the all around event that combined scores from the cable, boat, slider park and obstacle only competition. Nick Davies lived up to expectations by narrowly defeating Tom Foshee, who till this point had pretty much been unbeatable. In the pro final between the two we saw a Crow Mobe 5, Mobe 5, Raily 5, Pete 5, HSBS 9, S Mobe and a complete mastery of the rails. The two raised the level of cable riding to an unprecedented level. Reed Hansen was on mission winning two of the three wakeskate disciplines. Reed barely missed the triple crown when his kick flip to backlip was not enough to beat Andy Pastura (nose slide to front big out) in the Rail Jam finals. The women’s cable final saw Maxine Sapullete nail a crow mobe off the kicker for her last trick that sealed the victory over Raimi Merrit. Dean Smith couldn’t be beat in any of his heats on the boat lake, not even by Philip Soven. After a disappointing finish in boat and cable, Keith Lidberg totally redeemed himself with a TSBS450 out of the pool onto the rail to win the rail park finals. Remember the name Daniel Grahm, this twelve year old from Singapore won a few events and podiumed in a few more. He was seen throughout the week landing tootsies, crow mobes and tantrums 2blind as well as kick flips and big spins on the skate. You will be hearing a lot more about this rider in the near future. I am not sure if I was more impressed with the riding or the complex, either way this has to be the most memorable wakeboard event I have been to.

Red Bull Wake Lab: April 3-4
On April 3 and 4, the city of Tempe will play host to the biggest and most innovative wakeboarding event ever devised as Red Bull Wake Lab descends smack dab in the middle of Tempe Town Lake. Created as an experiment to see how far the boundaries of the sport of wakeboarding could be pushed, the groundbreaking event will take place in conjunction with the Circle K Tempe Music Festival. Influenced by the design of the modern skateboarding skatepark and snowboarding snowpark, a massive wakepark was constructed to include a mix of hand and transfer rails, sliders, an elevated pool and a 16-foot high wall ride/quarterpipe. The result, a massive floating skatepark, dubbed "The Wake Lab" allows riders to perform sets of tricks that were once impossible, raising the sport to never-before-seen levels. And don't expect to see any boats on the lake towing the riders - a revolutionary pulley system, the Sesitec System 2.0, will tow athletes back and forth across the lake and the Wake Lab's various rails, pools, sliders and wall.
